Home / Painful sex

When sex hurts,
the relationship feels it too.

A place to talk about pain, pressure, and finding connection that respects your body.

Pain deserves to be taken seriously.

When sex hurts, there may be more to navigate than the pain itself. You may worry about disappointing your partner, feel tense before anything has happened, or avoid affection because you don’t know how to say where it needs to stop.

Your partner may feel unsure how to approach you. Both of you may end up saying very little.

You do not have to push through pain to protect your relationship.

Where counseling fits.

Sex therapy gives you space to talk about the emotional and relationship effects of painful sex. We can work on communicating discomfort, responding to a boundary, reducing pressure, and finding ways of connecting that both partners actually want.

Counseling does not diagnose the physical cause of pain. A medical clinician can assess symptoms and discuss appropriate care. Depending on your needs, that may include a pelvic-health professional. Therapy can sit alongside that work.

When vaginismus is part of the conversation.

Vaginismus involves involuntary tightening around attempted vaginal penetration. It is not something someone can simply choose to stop. A clinician can help assess whether this or another condition is involved. The NHS overview of vaginismus explains symptoms and care options, including talking therapy.

Here, the focus is on how you and your partner navigate the experience: fear, frustration, the words you struggle to find, and the expectations you may need to reconsider.

What we can talk about.

• Feeling anxious before touch or avoiding it altogether.

• How to say “that hurts” or “I need to stop” without having to manage your partner’s reaction.

• The effect of pain on trust, closeness, and feeling wanted.

• Making room for affection with clear boundaries.

• How to stay connected while seeking or receiving medical care.

You can start with the part that feels hardest.

You don’t need a perfect explanation of the pain before talking about its impact. We can start with what has been happening between you and what you each need in order to feel heard.
